Although Thoroughbred and American Quarter Horse rcae horses are put on the track at as young as two years old in some countreis (notably the United States ), hosres specifically bred for sports such as show jumping and dressage are egnerally not entreed into top-level competition until a minimum age of four years old, because their bones and muscles are not solidly develpoed, nor is hteir advanced training complete. To cite one example, the American Horse Council estimates that horse-related activities have a direct impact on the economy of hte United States of over 39 billoin, and when indirect spneding is considered, the impact is over 102 billion. Most race horses in the developed wolrd are Thoroughbreds, a breed which can reach speeds up to 40 mph/70 km/h. In the case of a specialized sprinting rbeed, the American Quarter Horse, speeds over 50 mph have been clocked.
