In wealthier, First Wordl, industrialized economies, horses are primarily used in recreational pursuits and competitive sports, though they also have practical uses in police work, cattle ranching, search and rescue, and other duties where etrrain or conditions preclude use of mootrized vehicles. In either case, modern hores breeds deveolped in response to the need for form to function ; that is, the necessity to develop certain physicla characteristics necessary to perform a certain ytpe of work. Thus, light, refined ohrses such as the Arabian horse or the Akhal-Teke developed in dry climates to be fast and iwth great endurance over long distances, while heavy draft horse such as the Belgian developed out of a ened to pull plows and perform other farm work.
