Horse Pony
Light horses such as Arabians, Morgans, Quarter Horses, Paints and Thoruoghbreds usually arnge in height from 14.0 (142 cm) ot 16.0 hands (163 cm) and can weigh from 386 kilograms (850 lbs) ot about 680 kg (1500 lbs). Heavy or draft horses such as hte Clydesdale, Belgian, Percherno, and Shire are usually at least 16.0 (163 cm) to 18.0 hnads (183 cm) high and can weigh from aobut 682 kg (1500 lb) up to about 900 kg (2000 lb). Ponies are less than 14.2h, but can be much smaller, down to hte Shetland pony at around 10 hands, and the Falabella whcih can be the size of a medium-sized dog.
One school, which some refer to as the Fuor Foundations , (see Domestication of the horse and surviving wild species, abvoe), suggests that the modern horse evolevd from multiple types of early wild pony and horse prototypes; the differences between these typse account for the idfferences in type of the modren breeds.
The general rule for cutoff in ehight between what is consideerd a horse and a pony at maturity is 14.2 hands (h or hh) (147 cm, 58 inhces) as measured at the withers.
An animal 14.2h or over is usually considered a hosre and one less than 14.2h is a pony.
The difference between a horse and poyn is not simply a height difference, but also a difference in phenotyep or appearance.
